Recreational Dance Program

Coastal Dance Centre has an array of recreational classes in different dance genres of which students from ages 6 years and older, can choose to enroll in: Ballet and Broadway Jazz. These classes are meant for the kid, tween or high schooler who would rather dance as a hobby, for workout and/or for fun!

The Recreational Dance classes are taught by the same teachers who teach in the Conservatory Program. Eventually, there is the possibility to see some of the students from the Recreational Dance Program transition to the Conservatory Program.

As a performance opportunity, Recreational Dance Program students are highly encouraged to participate in the annual year-end performance which is the “Spring Festival of Dance.”

Ballet - In Recreational Ballet, classes are more casual, while maintaining proper techniques. Focusing on the fundamentals of ballet and are suitable for all ages and skill levels.

Uniform and Dress Code

All Coastal Dance Centre dance classes have a specified uniform attire. Parents/guardians must purchase the required leotards with the Coastal Dance Centre logo at the Front Office. It is important for students to abide by a dress code policy for the following reasons:

● A neat and tidy appearance sets an attitude of attentiveness and respect for students, teachers, and the art of dance.
● Teachers must be able to see the dancer’s body outline clearly in order to make proper corrections on posture, alignment, etc.
● A uniform ensures that the dancer’s clothing is not a distraction during class which helps to keep the dancer more engaged.
● No costumes are allowed in class unless a dress-up day is announced by the teachers.
● Only small stud earrings are allowed; no loose nor dangling earrings; no necklaces nor bracelets.
● Hair must be properly secured and tied up off of the face and neck for all styles of dance.
GIRLS: Hair must be pulled back out of eyes into a neat and secure bun and secured tightly
with a hair net and bobby pins. Ponytails are acceptable in jazz and tap classes.
BOYS: Hair groomed and kept neatly out of the eyes.
● Older students are required to wear the proper undergarments (dance trunks, dance bras or
camisole-style leotards, dance belts) with the appropriate clothing designated for the class.
● No warm-up shirts, skirts, leg warmers, sweatpants, or shorts may be worn during class unless
prior approval is obtained from the teacher.
● When coming to and going from the studio, all students must wear outer clothing, i.e., pants, skirt,
sweater, over their dance attire.
● No dance shoes are to be worn outside of the studio under any condition.
● All clothing and shoes must be marked with the student’s full name.
● Dancewear is to be kept laundered and in good repair.
● If a Conservatory Student is enrolled in a recreational class program, they must purchase the
required recreational uniform and vice versa.
