Conservatory Dance Program

The Coastal Dance Centre Conservatory Program is a comprehensive dance training and performance experience and is carefully and progressively designed to take the student from the earliest stages of intensive training for our students, ages 7 and older, from Primary level, through to the grades and vocational or pre-professional dance training.

Conservatory Program students in the vocational / higher levels are provided with increased performance opportunities, master classes with guest teachers, coaching and participation in elite competitions either as a solo or ensemble competitor, as well as the opportunity to be part of the school’s performing company, Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre.

Conservatory Dance Program students are afforded several opportunities to perform throughout the year. Performance opportunities are based on the interest of the student.

Coastal Dance Centre RAD Ballet students in the Conservatory Program are eligible to participate in the annual Nutcracker production of Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre, Coastal Dance Centre’s official performing company, by auditioning for roles that may be opened up for non-CYBT company members. When auditioning, it must be noted that Elite Conservatory Program and Junior Conservatory Program students automatically become CYBT company members and will have priority over the non-CYBT company members with regards to casting for roles because Elite Conservatory Program and Junior Conservatory Program students are required and commit to longer rehearsal times, which is a substantial commitment of time and energy.

• The Spring Festival of Dance is Coastal Dance Centre’s annual year-end showcase performance for our dance families and supportive audience members.

• We also have performance opportunities for Elite Conservatory, Junior Conservatory and Competition Team students to participate in various community events and area school events.

With our Conservatory Dance Program based on the RAD Ballet foundation and an array of supplemental dance classes, our students have the opportunity to train and prepare for competitions. Our Elite Conservatory and Junior Conservatory students have successfully competed in elite ballet events such as the Youth America Grand Prix, World Ballet Competition, American Ballet Competition, the RAD Dance Challenge, and the Helsinki International Ballet Competition in Finland. Our Competition Team members have competed in competitions such as Encore Dance Competition, Groove, Showstopper, Hollywood Vibe, and Hollywood Dance Jamz.

With a variety of programs and class offerings, we look forward to introducing your children to the wonderful world of dance!

Class Descriptions

RAD Ballet - Emphasis on technique, alignment, and classical repertoire. Students are taught through RAD's Grade Levels (Primary, Grade 1 to 8 etc.) New students, by placement. Please see the Front Office staff to schedule a placement class.

Acrobatic Arts or Acro - Flexibility and muscle control shown through artistic moves. PREREQUISITE: Must be enrolled in corresponding RAD Ballet Level.

Jazz - High-energy classes focusing on rhythm, style, and performance quality.

Lyrical - Focus on emotions, musicality, and visual storytelling.

Open Ballet - Barre, conditioning and floor exercises

How to Enroll

 NEW Coastal Dance Centre Students:

  • New students enrolling in dance classes, particularly ballet, from ages 7 and up and/or with previous dance training must take a LEVEL PLACEMENT CLASS before registering for classes.
  • A Level Placement Class will allow the teacher to assess the student and then make the best recommendation for the appropriate level that will be beneficial to the student’s learning and growth. The recommended level will be based on their performance and skills in the class, age, and ability. Once the teacher informs the Front Office staff or the child’s parents, you can register through the Front Office or online. There is a level placement fee of $25.
  • Email or call to schedule a Placement Class. Once a level is assigned to your dancer, fill up this REGISTRATION FORM and within the form, add the classes your level

RETURNING Coastal Dance Centre Students:

  • All returning CDC students who have taken and passed the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) exam in the previous dance year 2025-26, are to register for the next level through the PARENT PORTAL. Returning students who have not taken the RAD exam should contact the Front Office to inquire about the level recommendation.

Uniform and Dress Code

All Coastal Dance Centre dance classes have a specified uniform attire. Parents/guardians must purchase the required leotards with the Coastal Dance Centre logo at the Front Office. It is important for students to abide by a dress code policy for the following reasons:

● A neat and tidy appearance sets an attitude of attentiveness and respect for students, teachers, and the art of dance.
● Teachers must be able to see the dancer’s body outline clearly in order to make proper corrections on posture, alignment, etc.
● A uniform ensures that the dancer’s clothing is not a distraction during class which helps to keep the dancer more engaged.
● No costumes are allowed in class unless a dress-up day is announced by the teachers.
● Only small stud earrings are allowed; no loose nor dangling earrings; no necklaces nor bracelets.
● Hair must be properly secured and tied up off of the face and neck for all styles of dance.
GIRLS: Hair must be pulled back out of eyes into a neat and secure bun and secured tightly
with a hair net and bobby pins. Ponytails are acceptable in jazz and tap classes.
BOYS: Hair groomed and kept neatly out of the eyes.
● Older students are required to wear the proper undergarments (dance trunks, dance bras or
camisole-style leotards, dance belts) with the appropriate clothing designated for the class.
● No warm-up shirts, skirts, leg warmers, sweatpants, or shorts may be worn during class unless
prior approval is obtained from the teacher.
● When coming to and going from the studio, all students must wear outer clothing, i.e., pants, skirt,
sweater, over their dance attire.
● No dance shoes are to be worn outside of the studio under any condition.
● All clothing and shoes must be marked with the student’s full name.
● Dancewear is to be kept laundered and in good repair.
● If a Conservatory Student is enrolled in a recreational class program, they must purchase the
required recreational uniform and vice versa.
