A beginning student joining the school for the first time may be placed in the Recreational Track and as the student advances in training, the student may opt to transition to the Pre-Professional Track. New students with prior experience must take a placement class before registering for classes. Placement in these programs is done according to age, experience, and ability. The Recreational Track
The Recreational Track offers a wide range of classes for students who wish to take dance for exercise, coordination, discipline and fun and in the process, students achieve an understanding and appreciation of the art form. Students meet only once or twice a week and prepare for the annual year-end performance in June.
The Pre-Professional Track
The Pre-Professional Track prepares students for future acceptance to dance companies or university dance programs or simply for students to continue to improve their skills at a higher level. Training under the Pre-Professional Track coincides with opportunities to participate in the school’s performing company which is – Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre.
Performing opportunities other than the school’s year-end “Spring Festival of Dance” performance is by way of participation in the holiday productions of “The Nutcracker” and story ballets that are produced during the Spring.
Students in the Pre-Professional Track may also be invited by the artistic staff to take private lessons and prepare to compete as soloists in ballet competitions such as the Youth America Grand Prix and World Ballet Competition.
How to be a member of Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre
Students who audition / or are invited to become members of Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre are those who possess attributes that are generally considered requisites for professional accomplishments in classical ballet and those who are determined to commit to longer hours of ballet training, commit to attend rehearsals in preparation for the company’s productions / performances. It demands a lot of hard work and focus from the student. Enrollment in prescribed ballet classes and other supplemental dance styles are required.
Students audition for placement in the performing company, Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre. Once accepted, the student is required to attend a number of classes and rehearsals per week. The focus is on intense training involving technique classes and many hours of rehearsals in preparation for performances and competitions. Excellent attendance and a high degree of commitment are necessary to remain in this program.
Students who are accepted are placed in the appropriate company division.
Junior Apprentice Level – ideally at ages 7 – 9 yrs
Apprentice Level – ideally at ages 10 and up
Junior Company Level – for ages 10 – 16 yrs
Senior Company Level – for ages 13 – 17 yrs
Coastal Dance Centre students enrolled in the ballet program and who are interested in becoming a company member of Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre must sign-up to audition. Auditions are generally held in May.
There is a $25.00 audition fee. Check out the calendar of events in the month of May for the scheduled audition date.
